Fishing Hot-Spots in the Boise Area

The Boise River flows through downtown Boise and offers a multitude of convenient fishing locations. You will find rainbow and brown trout stocked at different points along the River from Barber Park and Glenwood Bridge. While the fishing is good from just about any point along the greenbelt, easy fly-fishing access can be had at the bridges at Parkcenter Boulevard, Americana Boulevard, and Glenwood Street.

Quinn's Pond at Bernardine Quinn Riverside Park, offers fishing and swimming that is off the beaten path. You will have to walk the Greenbelt to Quinn's Pond from the parking spot on 31st Street and Pleasanton. No motorized watercraft is allowed on the pond, but it can be fished from a tube or kayak. The pond contains rainbow trout, bluegill, largemouth bass, and channel catfish.

Settlers Park Pond is easy to access and is in a beautiful park setting located at the northwest corner of Meridian and Ustick roads. You will find park facilities nearby including restrooms and a picnic area. The pond is known for having rainbow trout, bluegill, and largemouth bass.

McDevitt Pond is located on the corner of Eagle and McMillan Roads in Meridian. You will find trout and bluegill to be plentiful, as you fish in this park like setting.

Merrill Pond is located in Merrill City Park, just north of the Boise River on Eagle Road. Merrill Pond is stocked with rainbow trout, bluegill, and largemouth bass.

Parkcenter Park, located off of Parkcenter Boulevard in East Boise, has an 8-acre pond with handicapped-accessible dock and public restroom. Here you can fish for trout and bass with ease.

Riverside Pond is tucked away amongst the shade trees off of Glenwood Road and offers good bank fishing. Located at the corner of Glenwood Road and Riverside Drive, the pond features rainbow trout, bluegill, and largemouth bass.

Veterans Park Pond is just a short walk from a playground and park facilities along the Boise Greenbelt. The pond sits at the back of Veterans Park on the corner of Veterans Parkway and State Street in downtown Boise. At Veteran's Pond, you will find rainbow trout, bluegill, and largemouth bass.

***Remember: You cannot keep bass under 12” in the Boise area.

Fishing Hot-Spots Outside the City

If you want to get out of the city and try some truly awe-inspiring angling, check out these fishing hot-spots:

Lake Lowell at the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge can be fished for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, perch, crappie, bluegill, rainbow trout, channel catfish, and brown bullhead. Snake River fishing can be accessed from the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge, as well, from the Snake River Islands.

Henry's Fork is renowned for its dry fly wade fishing for trophy rainbow trout. The ranch section in Harriman State Park is the considered the ultimate challenge among experienced anglers. It is a five-hour drive from Boise to Harriman State Park, but overnight accommodations are available and the experience is worth the drive.

The Payette River has sections of fishing hot-spots that are good for a variety of different fish. The Idaho Statesman recommends the section between Horseshoe Bend and McCall for great trout fishing. If you prefer to catch smallmouth bass, the section of the Payette River between Emmett and New Plymouth is a good place to cast your fishing poles.

Swan Falls Dam & Recreation Area along the Snake River is located south of Kuna, Idaho approximately 20 miles.  Below the dam there are numerous spots to fish along the banks during a day excursion.  The recreational area is also a great location to enjoy amazing views of one of the largest rivers in the Pacific Northwest.  The fish variety at Swan Falls includes smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, bullheads and channel catfish.

Wherever you take Dad fishing this Father's Day, enjoy the time spent together. Happy Fishing!  For more information about fishing in Idaho please visit the Idaho Department of Fish & Game website.
